Students in Lower School, for ages 6 – 9 (Grades 1 – 3), are part of a three-year Montessori classroom community, where students remain with the same teacher and peers across multiple years. Language development at Alexander Montessori School Miami begins early and grows with each stage of the journey. Families can choose Spanish immersion in Preschool, where children are introduced to Spanish in everyday learning, and this foundation continues through the Elementary years with dedicated Spanish instruction, Spanish materials in the classroom, and guidance from native Spanish-speaking teachers.
With students and families representing 23 languages and nationalities from 6 of the 7 continents, the school nurtures strong communication skills in a globally minded environment. Additional support through ESOL, Reading Lab, and Spanish-language STAR assessments helps strengthen fluency, confidence, and connection across languages.
Alexander Montessori Lower School offers children a globally minded environment rooted in Montessori independence and enriched by the school’s place within ISP’s international community. Alongside the core Montessori curriculum, students benefit from a wide range of specials and enrichment, as well as annual events such as the Art Show and Choral/Cultural Performance.
Confidence, curiosity, and leadership are further developed through experiences such as the Spelling Bee, Science Fair, and Student Council. Learning is also extended beyond the classroom through field trips and experiential learning.
Our Lower School field trips rotate throughout the year, with past visits including the Little Farm, Real Food Academy, local theater productions, Shark Valley, Alligator Farm, Fairchild Tropical Gardens, Frost Science, Deering Estate, and Biscayne Nature Center.
Learning Lab
Students benefit from an English-language academic support program designed to challenge advanced readers and provide extra help for those who need it, particularly children whose first language is not English. Guided by an experienced Reading Clinician, the Learning Lab uses a range of reading tools and audio-visual resources to strengthen literacy skills, build confidence, and support steady progress in reading.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Lower School students benefit from intensive English-language support through ESOL, a language arts and cultural program designed to meet the specific needs of students with limited English proficiency. Serving students through Grade 5, the program develops listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing while reinforcing the skills and concepts taught in the regular English curriculum. Each student begins with an ESOL assessment followed by a parent conference, where individual needs and the most appropriate support pathway are discussed, ensuring a personalized approach to language growth and classroom success.
