Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular Activities and special performances throughout the year provide our children with the opportunity to develop the abilities of public speaking, to demonstrate special talents, to fulfill themselves outside the academic routine, and to enhance their enjoyment of the school experience. Children find Alexander Montessori School a happy, friendly, and challenging place.

Some of these activities are conducted during school hours and others are conducted after school. Please contact your Campus Secretary for more information and a Registration Form.

Extended Day and Homework Helper

Activity: Extended Day Program

Description: Available until 6:00 PM on all school days
Location: Red Road Campus/Ludlam Road Campus
Ages: 3-12

Activity: Homework Helper

Description: This program includes supervised homework, help in areas of need, and enrichment activities after completion of homework. Homework Helper is open to any child from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Space is limited. No minimum enrollment.

Fine Art Extracurricular Activities

Activity: Art Classes

Description: Express, enjoy, and explore the world of the arts! Students will be inspired to think creatively and to be original in a fun environment, while also nurturing self-confidence, improving fine motor skills, and boosting problem-solving abilities. Art Classes include a variety of materials and techniques in painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, ceramics, 3D projects, and more. You may register your child for one or more class days per week. Minimum enrollment: 5 students.

Activity: Cooking 101

Description: The kitchen is our first and most used laboratory. In this class, we will learn cooking fundamentals and classical technique while learning the science of the kitchen. Students will learn safe food handling, cooking fundamentals, knife skills, nutrition, teamwork, and self-reliance, extending Montessori principles of practical life into the kitchen. Students will work in groups of four to prepare everyday dishes that are delicious and nutritious. Minimum enrollment: 4 students. Maximum enrollment: 12 students.

Foreign Language Extracurricular Activities

Activity: Conversational Spanish

Description: We will be covering vocabulary and conversation. Kindergarteners will be preparing for First Grade Spanish. Level of difficulty will increase at the pace of the children. Class size is limited to 10 children. We have two choices: Twice per week or once per week. No minimum enrollment.

Activity: Spanish Enrichment (Elementary)

Description: This class will focus on Spanish language acquisition through reading and storytelling utilizing only high frequency Spanish vocabulary. The class will be taught using CI (Comprehensible Input) and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) methods. Minimum enrollment: 4 students; maximum enrollment: 10 students.

Activity: French

Description: This program is for the entire year and only begins in the fall.
Location: All classes take place during the day at the Campus where your child attends.

Performing Arts Extracurricular Activities

Activity: Ballet at Your School

Description: Dancing is emotional and physical therapy which helps children develop poise, discipline, and strength. Treat your child to a great experience. Dancing improves concentration, coordination, and communication. Your school is proud to present to your child the opportunity to study dance on school premises. Once a week, a Ballet at Your School instructor transforms a classroom into a dance room. Do not let this opportunity go by without giving it your full attention. This is a good time to get your child involved in our program.

Activity: Ballet II & III

Description: Ballet II: An introduction to ballet with beginning development of ballet concepts including turn out, coordination, spatial awareness, and a specific focus on class etiquette. Students will begin positions of the feet and introductory movement vocabulary. Class will focus on basic ballet technique, proper body alignment, French terminology, and musicality. Students will be introduced to elementary barre and center work.
Ballet III: As with each level, students are invited to Ballet Level III after they have demonstrated full understanding of the previous level. Body alignment and muscle awareness will determine progress. This class will focus on positions of the arms, direction of the body, and increased movement vocabulary. In Ballet III, attention is paid to the proper extension of the legs and shape of the feet, developing movement sequences, port de bras, and balance. Students will see an increase in difficulty in barre and center work.

Activity: Pre Pointe

Description: (Eligibility based off of Teacher approval & must be enrolled in Ballet I, II, or III to participate). Pre Pointe is a beginner class introducing the dancer to using pointe shoes. Students will begin to learn fundamentals of connecting ballet movements to pointe work. Dancers will use the barre to strengthen feet and learn balance, while achieving a comprehensive understanding of proper pointe shoe mechanics.

Activity: Pointe I

Description: (Eligibility is based off of Teacher approval & must be enrolled in Ballet I, II, or III to participate). Pointe I is an advanced level of ballet with the use of pointe shoes. Students will continue to advance their skills on pointe. Barre work will continue to strengthen technique and balance, and students will begin center work and across the floor variations.

Activity: Dance Program (Preschool)

Description: In this class, your child will learn effective methods of stretching to improve flexibility, how to find beats and rhythm in a song, as well as dance routines performed at the end of the term. The classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays only. SO PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES!! Minimum enrollment: 5 students.

Activity: Contemporary Dance I & II

Description: Contemporary Dance I: Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines lyrical, modern, and jazz techniques stemming from a foundation of ballet. Contemporary dancers learn to connect mind, body, and soul to the movements and interpretation of music. Students will begin to develop improvisation and composition techniques
Contemporary Dance II is an advanced level of Contemporary Dance I.

Activity: Dance Team I & II* (Elementary)

Description: The main goal is to teach fundamentals of all forms of dance, including hip hop, jazz, theater/Broadway, modern, ballet, and exercise fitness styles. Classes will be taught in a structured and inviting format allowing for free play and exercise of improvisational skills. This program is designed to increase physical and mental fitness, while providing a fun environment for instructional techniques and creative expression. See your child on stage - a show will be performed by all students at the end of each semester. So bring your dancing shoes, dress to move, and let’s dance! Minimum enrollment: 5 students; *Dance Team II is the more advanced extension of Dance Team I. To participate in Dance Team II, students must complete one full year in Dance Team I to gain a basic foundation in dance technique.

Activity: Hip Hop II

Description: Hip Hop II is a fun, high-energy class which uses child-appropriate popular hip hop and pop music. Students will learn to express themselves through the combination of street dance with funk and jazz techniques.

Activity: Drama Club

Description: In this acting class, students will focus on acting skills and character development through classic techniques, modern stage exercises, and improvisational games. Students will perform in group scene work to further explore the interpretation of reading scripts and how this translates into characterization. Classes will focus on enriching reading skills and preparation for on-stage performance. Each actor or actress will find their own unique interpretation and creative expression, building self-esteem and teamwork among friends. Each semester will end with a full-production show. Minimum enrollment: 5 students.

Activity: Piano Lessons

Description: Piano lessons for children (5 - 12). These are private lessons in the Music Room with a trained instructor and professional performer.

Activity: Rock Band

Description: Rock band is for musicians and singers who want to play and learn about “Classic Rock and Roll.” They will join a rock band and learn to play guitar, drums, bass, and vocals in a fun group setting. Gary Powell is the drum teacher and Mr. Falk teaches the Keyboards, Guitar, and Bass. The students learn technique, chords, and rhythms of music by the Beatles, The Who and AC/DC (for example). The bands perform several times a year at carnivals, festivals, and malls. Our recording studio can make records of CDs and MP3s. Music and music books provided. Instruments are available for beginners just starting out. Important: Beginning musicians must take private lessons at first until they can learn in the group setting.

Activity: The Singers Club & The Show Choir

Description: The Singers Club is for beginning vocalists and The Show Choir is for advanced singers. The Singers Club (K - 2nd Grade) is for girls and the Show Choir (3rd - 5th Grades) is for both boys and girls. The two Clubs emphasize singing solo, harmonizing, and developing a group sound with their classmates. The singers rehearse in a studio that's designed for recording. We have recording equipment where we make our CDs and MP3 records. Singers choose from hundreds of selections (pop, rock, country, or Broadway) what material they want to sing and learn how to perform their favorite songs with a PA system, microphones, background music, and professional coaching. We perform locally at various venues around Miami. The Show Choir tours throughout the State of Florida and has won awards at the Orange Bowl Parade, Walt Disney World, and Universal Studios. The Show Choir competes in national singing competitions, too. Our choreographers coach the students on how to move when singing.

Sports and Movement Extracurricular Activities

Activity: Preschool Flag Football

Description: R.Y.A.N. Flag Football introduces children to football, emphasizing fun. They will learn how to play, picking up skills such as passing, catching, and flag-pulling. We are currently registering boys and girls on a first come, first serve basis. Objective: To develop a sense and understanding of football, self-confidence, leadership skills, positive relationships with teammates, positive social relationships, and to have fun! Children 4 years and older will develop flag football-related motor skills and sportsmanship. Minimum enrollment: 8 students.

Activity: Preschool Soccer Program

Description: Our program follows guidelines and recommendations set by the United States Youth Soccer Association. Small-sided games will be used to increase each child’s chance to touch the ball. We are currently registering boys and girls on a first come, first serve basis. Minimum enrollment: 6 students.

Activity: SNAG® Golf

Description: SNAG® Golf is all about having FUN while learning the basics of golf. SNAG® Golf is a player-friendly, first touch development program designed for both children and adults. It incorporates developmentally appropriate equipment that will allow golf to be learned and played in non-traditional venues, such as on a soccer field, in a gym, or on the beach. The program builds on strong fundamentals of the different strokes and swings, and develops playing ability quickly and effectively. SNAG® can be taught and played almost anywhere with immediate positive results. This immediate success keeps new learners wanting to be further involved with golf. SNAG® has developed an effective learning system with a manual and curriculum for new learners of all ages. Minimum enrollment: 2 children. Maximum enrollment: 8 children.

Activity: Stretch & Conditioning

Description: Body Conditioning for Dancers uses a combination of Pilates, floor barre, and other exercise techniques to improve balance, strength, placement, flexibility, and coordination. This is an opportunity to work exclusively on dance tricks, turns, and leaps specific to each dancer’s skill level. Students will learn to connect muscle development to strengthen their technique and increase flexibility in class and on stage to improve overall dance development and athleticism.

Activity: Swimming Program

Description: You are taking a big step toward making your family safer. You are providing valuable tips that can help your child prepare for an aquatic emergency. Play and fun experiences are essential for the development of a child’s positive attitude toward the world. Images, games, and rhymes make use of a child’s natural ability to imagine and pretend while learning swimming-related skills. Goals include basic water skills and helping swimmers feel comfortable in the water. Minimum enrollment: 5 children.

Activity: Tennis Program

Description: Our team takes a unique approach to a classic sport. While your child is developing a (tennis) skill, they will also be developing Confidence, Capability, and Clarity. This investment in your child's future will help them on and off the court, taking them from where they are to where they would like to be.

Activity: Tee-Ball

Description: Learning the basic guidelines of baseball, catching, throwing, hitting, and working together as a team will be included in the program. Required equipment consists of a baseball glove and a hat. Please send your child with a comfortable outfit to wear during practice. Minimum enrollment: 6 students.

Activity: Yoga

Description: Our goal is to integrate the different aspects of our nature – body, mind, and emotions. The program comprises breathing exercises, yoga poses, games, storytelling, art crafting activities, mindfulness, and relaxation. We use creative movement, music, instruments, and smart toys, among others, to create a joyful and engaging environment. The classes have a structured routine that respects each age group and its brain developmental stage. Breathing exercises help to calm and balance the nervous system and increase focus and attention. The yoga postures strengthen the body and increase flexibility, balance, coordination, and stimulate mind-body integration. The Happy Warriors Yoga program contributes to the enhancement of each child’s brain development - to harmonically connect the right and left hemispheres, resulting in better attention, concentration, creativity, and imagination. Minimum enrollment: 5 students per class.

Recreational Games Extracurricular Activities

Activity: Chess

Description: Learn strategies and tactics for every part of chess (openings, middle, & end games). Every player will receive a US Chess Federation rating and learn to play a time-controlled game (with clocks), along with recreational play (including BLITZ! and solving fun puzzles). Our goal is to build an Alexander Montessori Chess Team able to compete in USCF-sanctioned events, both on a regional and national championship level. For Preschool through 5th Grade; no prerequisites required. Beginners through experienced players welcome. Minimum enrollment: 5 students.

Activity: Mah Jongg

Description: American Mah Jongg is a variant to the Chinese game, mahjong. It is played with four players using 144 tiles stamped with Chinese characters and symbols. Each player begins by receiving 13 tiles followed by a process of passing tiles and then taking turns drawing and discarding tiles, much like the card game, Gin Rummy. The goal is to be the first to match their tiles to a specific hand from the National Mah Jongg League’s annually distributed card. Fundamentals are taught the first several sessions with the goal of independent play by the middle of the year. Students enjoy this fun, but challenging game, which builds logical thinking, strategy, and focusing skills. Minimum enrollment: 6 students. Maximum enrollment: 12 students.

STEAM Inspired Extracurricular Activities

Activity: LegoLab

Description: LegoLab is where children who have a love for Legos can learn to become a Master Builder. This program was created to drive each child’s building capability to a higher level of design and engineering. The builders will be motivated to create models using unique Lego pieces from the past and present. Classes will be taught in a structured environment with a maximum of 20 students. Activity: Nexplore Games

Description: Nexplore Games is an innovative program that uses an internationally acclaimed selection of strategy and mind games to enhance 21st century life skills and teach students how to think, rather than what to think. Nexplore Games is the bridge that connects the world of games to the real world. During the course, students reflect and learn meta-cognitive models, which are then applied to all walks of life and scholastic achievements. The Nexplore Game Method is simple, yet powerful: Play – In the first stage, students learn a cutting-edge strategy game. Every class, a different game is introduced and explored. Learn – In the second stage, students learn game strategies and underlying thinking concepts to improve their game skills and meta-cognition. Apply – In the third stage, students are guided to make connections and applications to the real world. Minimum enrollment: 6 students.

Activity: Nexplore Science

Description: Nexplore Science is a program built upon inquiry, experimentation, and play! Students will dive deep into various scientific concepts such as electricity, inventions, sound, energy, physics, light, nature, earth sciences, and more! Each class teaches fundamental scientific ideas to children through hands-on play and activities. Each student will receive their very own ScienceWiz™ Kit to explore throughout the course. Students will experiment, investigate, and build understanding from dynamic weekly activities. Minimum enrollment: 6 students.

Activity: Robotics and S.T.E.M. Rotation

Description: WTU’s S.T.E.M. Rotation is a dynamic curriculum of various S.T.E.M. activities in a fun learning environment.

Robotics: This program encompasses building different basic and complex motorized models using Lego bricks and child-friendly coding from Lego WEDO and NXT to make the models move to your child’s customized commands.

Stop Motion Animation: Your child will be exposed to creating their own Lego Movie with their teammates. Our Instructors will help guide them with different phases of animation, such as story creation, building a Lego set, filming, and editing. At the end of 5 weeks, we will provide them with a copy of their own stop motion film.

Coding/Game Creation: Your child will be introduced to the world of coding and game creation through fun, child-centered programs and activities. Students will have a combination of instructor-led and self-paced learning.

Minecraft: Using our private virtual Minecraft classroom server, your child will be placed in teams to solve missions and creative projects. Students use detailed lesson plans to solve math problems and use maps and riddles to accomplish the mission for their team. Your child must have a PC/MAC account prior.

Join in any week; we will prorate your enrollment. Minimum enrollment: 5. Maximum enrollment: 18.

Activity: D-Lab

Description: D-Lab (Designers Laboratory) has been created and inspired from Leonardo da Vinci’s studies in art, which mixes science, mechanical, architectural, and design skills to achieve a masterpiece of invention. The observation and deep examination of the human body, environment, and nature gives us endless sources of inspiration that, when translated to the students, will result in an amazing adventure of learning, self-pride, and confidence-building, as well as the stimulation of the senses and imagination.

All projects are carried on with eco-friendly, recycled, or recyclable materials that are shaped into a durable, useful, and collectible piece of art. D-Lab aims to motivate children to be curious, resourceful, and to become problem-solvers. Minimum enrollment: 10 students.
