Dr. Jerry Schumm Visit

The Fourth and Fifth Graders had a special visitor recently.  Dr. Jerry Schumm is a former Alexander Montessori School Faculty Member.  He has written a book called Pass the Paddle: Mississippi Dreamin’ Come Hell or High Water (available on Amazon or Barnes and Noble).

This book chronicles Jerry’s 113-day canoe trip from the source of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the Mississippi Delta in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Jerry Schumm was the Upper Elementary Social Studies Teacher at Alexander Montessori School from the late 1970’s to early 1980’s and was a mentor to Mr. Michael Depew, our current Mathematics Teacher.  Jerry has also had a career as a Congregational Minister and as a Middle School Teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  His Wife, Dr. Jeanne Schumm, was also on the Alexander Faculty.  She then served on the Faculty of the Education Department at the University of Miami, and was on Dr. Joyce McGhee’s PhD Dissertation Committee.  The Schumms’ daughter, Jamie, is an Alexander alumna.  Jamie is currently a Teacher in the New Orleans Public School system.
